Approximately 18% of CT households with working adults have health care costs that exceed their ability to afford basic needs and the rate jumps to 42% for people who purchase insurance on Access Health CT, the state health insurance exchange. Black, Latino/a, and low-income families are disproportionately affected by higher health care costs because they are more likely to work lower-paying jobs and less likely to have access to employer-sponsored health insurance. At HES, we advocate loudly for policies that center equity AND prioritize healthcare affordability, not just one or the other. Your donation to HES CAN directly diminish inequities in wealth and health and impact better health outcomes for people of color living in CT.

Access to justice is linked to better health. Research shows that 60 percent of a person's health is determined by social factors, including income and health insurance, housing and utilities, education, employment and personal and family stability. Universal health insurance advice: double-check a provider/hospital bills that seem off. There are abundant opportunities for errors between the point of service and sending out bills. That number you can call for questions is well worth using, and very often the people on the other side of the phone are friendly and know what to double-check before you can even figure it out! You might also find out about advocacy programs, especially things like income-based assistance sponsored by non-profit organizations. Did you know it only costs £4 a month to provide a Nasio family with medical insurance? Can you help, please?At present, our medical centre can only provide basic health care, and children are often referred to bigger hospitals for further care. Very few of our Nasio families can afford medical insurance, so these hospital trips cost can be cripplingly expensive!
