McCAIN DROPS OFF PIZZA TO FIREFIGHTERS CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) Republican presidential candidate John McCain dropped off pizzas to firefighters in Chillicothe on Wednesday as part of another campaign swing through Ohio.

Earlier in the day, McCain toured Merillat kitchen cabinet plant in Jackson in southcentral Ohio. He said the tax burden on businesses that make their home in the United States needs to be reduced and that new markets need to be opened to U.S. products. McCain plans a town hall meeting in Lima today, followed by a stop in Wilmington, where city officials are worried about the potential loss of 8,000 jobs at a nearby air park. Evan Bayh, as they part company after a stop at Schoop's diner Wednesday in Portage, Ind. Obama campaigns ns in northern Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh viewed by many as possible running mate BY TOM RAUM ASSOCIATED PRESS ELKHART, Ind.

Democrat Barack Obama campaigned on Wednesday with a man considered by many to be on his short list of running mates, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh. Obama called him "one of the finest U.S. senators that we have," but he gave no indication that he was nearing a vice presidential decision. Bayh was to spend the day with his neighboring senator in a usually Republican state that is viewed as a battleground this year.

Bayh, a former term governor and son of former Sen. Birch Bayh, has been widely viewed a top-tier running mate prospect. He is a former supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton, has executive experience and is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Furthermore, Democrats view Indiana which has not voted for a Democrat for president since 1964 as competitive. That led to considerable speculation, especially here, that if Obama had settled on Bayh, he would use this visit to announce the decision.

But it was not to be. Bayh said Obama would that McCain had some bad policies. Bayh opened his introduction of Obama by saying he had some "good news" to depart. "In five short months, the Bush administration will be done," Bayh said. A McCain victory, he said, would mean "four more years of what we've had." Obama campaigned in Indiana as his campaign released a new television ad that seeks to link McCain to President Bush and questions whether McCain 1 is the political maverick he claims to be.

It shows McCain acknowledging that he agrees with Bush on most issues. The ad also criticizes McCain on three economic issues of concern to middleclass voters: tax breaks for the wealthy, money for oil companies, and tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas. The ad ends with a smiling McCain and Bush side by side. McCain's campaign turned out an ad Tuesday in the other direction, suggesting that McCain differs from Bush and the GOP on important issues without mentioning Bush by name. Sculpture recovered from river after flood 'Skopos' has been underwater since June COLUMBUS, Ind.

(AP) A one-ton steel sculpture knocked from its base June 7 by floodwaters that swept it into the East Fork White River is back on dry land after being plucked from the river by a crane. A volunteer crew used the crane Tuesday to lift the steel abstract sculpture from just below a dam at Columbus' Mill Race Park. They labored through a pouring rain to retrieve the sculpture. Because the sculpture had filled with water, workers first used power saws to cut slits in the statue's bottom so the water would drain out before it was moved to land. Artist Ric Bauer, who created the 15-foot tall sculpture in 1979, said the sculpture, called "Skopos" Greek for watchman or observer looks to be in "great "It has a few dents here and there but it's none the worse for wear," he said.

"I'm just amazed at the condition it is in." The June flooding also damaged hundreds of homes in Columbus and caused more than $100 million in damage to Columbus Hospital and a Cummins Inc. research and development center. Park officials say once the sculpture is returned to its base, it will be bolted down to prevent it from being washed into the river again. Wearly Monuments Reduced INFANT OF MA. MAS.
